Some facts about US immigration

Every year there are hundreds of thousands of people who immigrate to the United States. This may seem like a lot but as a percentage of population it is a much lower rate than most other Western nations. The result is that there is a lot of bad information out there about the process and the policy in general. Looking at some facts about US immigration should help you to understand it better.

Immigration USAThe most important fact that you need to keep in mind is that is very difficult for immigrants to move to the US. The reason for this is that the laws are very restrictive and as a result the number of people moving to the US has declined dramatically in recent years. As a proportion of population the immigration rate is only a third of what it was a hundred years ago. This almost entirely down to the restrictive policies that are designed to keep people out. The result is that there are far more people that want to move to the US than actually can.

There are a lot of people that view the current policy on immigration as being very short sighted. The country has an aging population with very little natural growth. There are serious questions about what is going to happen when the baby boomers retire, there are not really enough people to support that many retirees. This is why most other industrialized countries are actively pursuing immigrants. The US has not done this and has in fact created a lot of rules to keep them out. The day may becoming when we find out that this was a mistake.

Due to the fact that it is so hard to immigrate to the US there are plenty of people who do it illegally. Nobody really knows how many illegal immigrants there are in the US but by some estimates there are more people immigrating illegally than legally. This may or may not be true but everybody agrees that the number is large. What nobody can agree on is what to do about it. Ultimately the most likely thing is that nothing will be done which is hardly an ideal solution.

If you are thinking about moving to the US it is best if you can do it legally. This is not as hard as it is often made out to be but there are some challenges that you will have to overcome. The people with the best chance of being able to move to the US are those that have a close family member who is already a citizen. This is far and away the most common reason that a visa will be issued. If you don't have a family member in the states then your best bet is to develop job skills that are in high demand.
