Where to start when you want to move to the US?

Every year thousands of people move to the United States, and every year thousands more that want to are not able to. There is a very strict procedure that has to be followed if you are going to be allowed to immigrate and it is important that you make sure that you follow it properly. The big thing is knowing where to start when you want to move to the US.

The first thing that you are going to have to do in most cases if you want to move to the US is to get a visa that allows you entry into the country. This can be a bit of a challenge to get since there are really only two types of visas that you can use if you if want to become a permanent resident of the US. The first is a work visas the second is a family visa. If you have close relatives in the US the family visa will be far easier to get and is the way that the vast majority of immigrants get into the US.

In order to get one of these visas your sponsor will have to make a petition on your behalf. This is not something that you can do yourself, either your family member or your potential employer will have to do it for you. If the petition is approved you will be invited to the US embassy or consulate in your home country for an interview and to fill out the application. If this is approved you will be granted a visa allowing you to go to the US. Once you get there you will need to apply for a green card.

There is another way that you can get in if you don't have a family member in the US and you don't qualify for a work visa. This is the diversity lottery. Every year a certain number of green cards are made available to people from each country. All eligible applicants are then entered into a lottery with the winners getting a green card. In this case you will be given your green card while you are in your home country so you don't have to get a visa.

The process of immigrating to the United States is long and complicated. It will likely take you months to get a green card and even then this is just the start. You will need to be patient during the process as it can be very frustrating. If you are considering moving to the US it is a good idea to talk to an immigration lawyer who can review your case and let you know how realistic your chances are. They will also be able to guide you through the process so that it goes as smoothly as possible.
